The story of Manual Woodworkers & Weavers dates back further than its founding in 1932 by Thomas Lemuel Oates. The roots of the company can be traced to Oates' entrepreneurial spirit, which he and his brother cultivated while farming the mountain areas of Bat Cave in western North Carolina. The brothers would also assist their mother in sourcing materials for her crafts, leading them to begin making their own wooden whistles, buckets, and birdhouses. They would then sell these homemade wares alongside their mother's crafts to the people from Charlotte who passed through the area in their horse-drawn buggies on their way to the mountains.

Later, Thomas Oates found work at the Asheville Postcard Company. When the Great Depression hit, he lost his job, but this setback inspired him to go into business for himself, selling crafts like cornhusk dolls and woven pieces produced by local women. Drawing on the knowledge he had gained about the wholesale business while working at Asheville, Oates built a waterwheel to generate electricity at a mill, began manufacturing his own products, and opened a shop.

Over the years, Oates expanded the company, which was eventually passed down to his son, Lemuel Oates, who had been involved in the business from a young age. Lemuel explained that the products were made from cotton scraps left over from sock production, with half-inch circles being looped together to form a variety of items.

Lemuel Oates went on to attend college and later settled in Richmond. However, in December 1973, he returned to Bat Cave and took over the company. In 2007, Lemuel's son, Travis, and daughter, Molly Oates Sherrill, assumed control of the business.

Today, Manual Woodworkers & Weavers continues to offer a range of products, including an inspirational theme fringed tapestry throw. This beautiful cotton throw features a design of a classically styled angel feeding birds, framed by floral elements. The throw is proudly made in the USA, and customers can search the Manual Woodworkers brand for matching pillows and other decorative items to complement the tapestry.
